Surface transport throughout East Timor can be difficult and time consuming. Consequently, many communities find themselves isolated with limited access to essential services and support. Also, agencies working in such communities find providing support and project supervision difficult, with much time and effort being consumed by travel. This is where MAF has come to assist.
After several scoping surveys MAF commenced its East Timor program in July 2007 with one GA8 aircraft. This aircraft is well suited to operations throughout the country, onto both large sealed runways, as well as short unsealed runways. This high-wing aircraft has large convex windows for excellent passenger visibility during surveys, and a cargo pod that allows the aircraft to be configured to carry between 400kg and 500kg of cargo and / or passengers.
MAF currently access five districts throughout East Timor which have runways of an adequate standard. The bulk of flights undertaken are for transporting medical patients from outer districts back to Dili and development agency staff engaged in a wide range of projects. The aircraft operates on a charter basis, at the times agencies require.
